Preparing to Marry the Person of Your Dreams…

Congratulations!  You are engaged!  How exciting…

I remember when I got engaged to my husband.  We were young, broke and naive.  Three of the best things to be if you are thinking about marriage. Ok, maybe not the best things.  In all honesty, we had no idea what we were doing.  We only knew that we loved each other and wanted to spend the rest of our lives together.  Neither of us understood yet that love meant sacrifice and the “rest of our lives” was a very, very long time.

Of course, we took the mandatory marriage counselling from the pastor who was performing our ceremony.  We suffered through the personality tests and talked about how many kids we wanted – but to be honest, I don’t remember any great a-ha moments.  I suppose we weren’t really listening.  Like I said, we wanted to get married.  What else did we need to know?

A lot.

That’s where Family Ministries wants to help.  We offer a great pre-marriage counselling course which is geared for couples who have decided to take the leap or those who wonder if taking the leap is even a good idea. You will work through topics such as communication, resolving conflict, nurturing your friendship and sex.  And guys, there is NO group work.  Just conversation between you and your special lady.   If you get nothing else out of it, you at least get 5 great date nights.  (But you will get more out of it. Promise.)

So, 20 years later, my husband and I are still happily married.  We cannot take any credit for that fact.  God has been beyond faithful to two dumb kids jumping into a lifetime commitment.  What we did not understand about commitment, God did — and He has been making up the difference ever since.
