“When the oceans rise and thunders roar,
I will soar with you above the storm,
Father you are King over my flood,
I will be still and know you are God”
Lyrics from Hillsong United: “Still”
Sometimes being still seems contrary to everything our instincts tell us to do. For myself I know I often want to take things into my own hands and do everything I can to fix situations around me. Yet somehow all of my worry doesn’t change a thing. The best thing I can do is trust, and find rest in God. It’s counter-intuitive to be still, but sometimes it’s what God calls us to do.
On the days when I feel like there’s not an ounce of fight left in me I hold onto the words, “The Lord will fight for you; you need only be still” (Exodus 14:14). It’s easy to get our eyes focused on the mountains that seem to tower over us day in and day out, but what happens when we place our eyes on the Rock that is higher? I’ve come to realize that in the chaos of the everyday and in the struggles that seem to overwhelm me the best thing I can do is just be still, and know that He’s God.
